It’s Tories’ duty to cut fuel taxes

-

■ With petrol now at £2 a litre (or £10 a gallon as Boris Johnson would have it with his return to imperial measures) it is well past time for Rishi Sunak to remove duty completely from the price of petrol and diesel.

It has always been unfair for motorists to be taxed twice through fuel duty and VAT. Now action is needed more so than ever with the cost-of-living emergency.

The Chancellor should also remove VAT completely from our utility bills. The Government has introduced so many stealth taxes over the years, as well as increasing road tax.

The British people should be screaming out for action from this Government. We are taxed enough, so start giving us some back.

Victor Laidlaw St Leonards-on-Sea, East Sussex

■ How much more can the British public take? The price of fuel is crippling most people, yet oil companies are still raking in billions in profits each quarter. The Chancellor may have reluctantly slapped them with a few pounds extra tax as a one-off but the Treasury also adds to its coffers every time the price of petrol goes up with VAT and fuel duty. The Government should tax oil companies at the same rate they tax us. It would raise billions if they paid their fair share. Tony Ford

■ Transport Minister Grant Shapps is doing absolutely nothing about all the travel chaos, from the roads to the docks being clogged up, hundreds of flight cancellations and now the threat of a national rail strike. He just blames everyone else.

Petrol and diesel prices are way out of control and still the Government fails to act.

The whole country is upside down thanks to Boris’s bad Brexit.

■ Luckily, I don’t drive so this doesn’t affect me – but most people do and it is disgusting they are being charged so much for petrol. The clowns in charge need to get rid of VAT on petrol and remove fuel duty too. Everyone is being ripped off in all sorts of ways. Nicholas Hobson Bridlington, East Yorks

■ As the price of fuel rises for the sixth day in succession, we keep hearing how they have cut 5p VAT off fuel. As a motorist I can honestly say I never noticed it because it has been rising faster and faster over the last weeks. Rishi Sunak has the power to do something about it by cutting VAT.

Come on Chancellor sort it out – my pension is not elastic and I am sure there are many more in the same boat. Cut VAT now.

Dave Mellor, Warrington

■ Motoring organisations say cut down your mileage. Alas this isn’t an option for disabled people, where the car is their only method of movement and freedom.

They don’t have the option of cycling or walking, and even charging disability wheelchairs has now become a drain on resources.

With petrol prices going up daily budgeting isn’t possible, disabled people are being trapped in their homes and no one seems to have them on their radar.

S Vaughan, Birmingham.

■ Flights cancelled. Petrol prices sky high so people are staying at home. Fuel bills through the roof forcing people to wash in cold water. Petrol vehicles and gas boilers being phased out. Boris may be unpopular with many Tory MPs but Extinction Rebellion supporters must revere him. John Shale, Wigan
