Crazy flight plan needs grounding

-

FIRST we had Foreign Secretary, Liz Truss, wasting £500,000 on a private jet to Australia, although I must admit my main issue is with the £250,000 it cost to get her back.

Now we have Home Secretary Priti Patel spending a similar amount of taxpayers’ money trying to get another nearly empty plane off the ground to send a handful of asylum seekers to Rwanda.

Boris Johnson’s clear policy is to try and look good by appointing ministers even more incompetent than himself, but it shames this country and insults the electorate that these ghastly people occupy two of the great Offices of State.

■ Perhaps thought should be given to permit asylum seekers to stay in this country short term until their asylum applications can be properly assessed.

They could engage in jobs British citizens don’t wish to do, such as picking fruit and so on. This would save millions in accommodation costs, turning a negative situation into a positive one. Rwanda is nonsensical and it’s extremely doubtful if it will succeed anyway.

The cash squandered by the Tories over Rwanda is tantamount to playing Russian roulette... with hard-earned taxpayers’ money!

Bill Cook, Teignmouth, Devon

■ What a nasty image our country must have to the rest of the world. We have the worst PM in living memory, ably supported by

Priti Patel deporting asylum seekers to Rwanda. We are being isolated in a very dangerous world.

The Tory Party seems unable or unwilling to face up to its responsibilities. We may well live to regret their inaction.

Tony Sykes, Tunbridge Wells, Kent

■ It is not Priti Patel’s money being wasted, it is the taxpayers’ cash as normal. Now the bloated House of Lords are at it saying they are not happy with some of their meals and wine.

It beggars belief they complain about subsidised meals and wine when we are struggling with fullpriced food on top of bills. It is time for a clear-out of the lot of them.

Barbara Burridge Scunthorpe, North Lincs

■ So this government cannot give the NHS any more money, but they

can spend millions on trying to get refugees out of this country. Something does not add up here, the money is there but is being spent on the wrong things – the priorities are wrong.

They are supposed to make the welfare of the people of this country a priority, but are not doing so. I just hope that the people voting in the next election remember who they are looking after – and it is not us.

Margaret McAlister

South Yorkshire

■ How much of taxpayers’ money is being spent on the cost of this aircraft standing on the airfield doing nothing? It must be costing a fortune to hire.

R Tandy, Liverpool

■ The Government should abandon this policy of sending asylum seekers to Rwanda. It was always a mad, crazy idea from the start. It will never be a success. Richard Farrar, London

■ I’m willing to pay for a one-way ticket for Priti Patel to Rwanda. Hey, I’ll even buy one for Boris too. John Williams, Newcastle
