Maxwell bid to serve less time in Brit jail

CONVICTED sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell is desperate to transfer to a UK jail so she only serves half her 20year sentence behind bars.

The British socialite, 60, will appeal against her sentence from a New York court but, if she is unsuccessful, plans are afoot to have an application lodged to serve time in the UK.

A source told the Mirror: “Calculations have been carried out as to where Ghislaine would serve the least time behind bars.

“She is happy to be freed on licence just to get out of prison and her best option for getting out quicker is back in the UK.”

With good behaviour, she could have almost three years taken off her sentence in the US.

But after three years in the US she can apply to serve the remainder of her sentence in the UK.

It would leave her with 182 months left after a deduction of the time she spent in prison while awaiting trial. Government rules state that once a prisoner is transferred to the UK, they will be treated as if the remainder of their sentence had been imposed in the UK. They state: “This will not change the length of your sentence but may alter the time you spend in custody pursuant to that sentence.” In the UK, prisoners sentenced to two years or more serve half their sentence in prison and the rest in the community

on licence. If Maxwell were to transfer to a British prison she would have only 91 months – seven years and seven months left – before she is eligible to be released on licence.

She would be 70. But US officials could block her plans as she has “no automatic right to transfer” and her victims would object. Sarah Ransome, abused by paedophile Jeffrey Epstein and Maxwell, said: “Ghislaine must die in prison.”
