Defeat Tory ID rule and vote!

- Edited by FIONA PARKER Tony Howard, Salford

■ I would like to urge as many thousands of people, especially younger voters, to do everything they can to get some form of photo ID ready for the May local elections.

From what I can make out, the Tories seem to be hoping that some groups will be prevented from voting because they don’t have the right form of ID.

This is especially the case with younger voters. If this happens at the next general election then it could allow them to get back in. It is up to us, the voters, to ruin their chances because the sooner we get the Tories removed from office the sooner this country can get back on its feet.

So get your ID and make sure you vote in the local elections to send a clear message to the Tories.

■ As much as I object to needing a photo ID to vote, I’m not going to fall into the Tory trap of not having one in my possession. Despite the local photo booth not working, I cropped a photo taken outside, filled in the form online, attached the photo and got my Voter Authority Certificate back in three days.

The quick timing might be because so few people are applying. You can pick up the form at your local council office and or go online at www.gov.uk/ apply-for-photo-id-voterauthority-certificate. Geoff Willmetts Bridgwater, Somerset

■ I’m angry that the requirement for photo ID to vote does not seem to have been publicised much. I only found out about it by reading the Mirror.

I don’t drive so I don’t have a licence and my passport expired some years ago as I don’t plan to go abroad.

This is a complete fiasco and hasn’t been thought through or publicised properly meaning lots of people could be prevented from voting. And this is supposed to be a democratic country.

■ I only recently found out I’ll need photo ID to vote in upcoming elections. I discovered this accidentally and wonder why it hasn’t had more publicity. This is very disappointing because if people don’t know this there will be lots arriving at polling stations only to be turned away.

This is disturbing as people will be denied their democratic right to vote. We should be able to vote without restriction.

Harold Heyes, Bolton Gtr Manchester

■ The requirement for voter ID at polling stations is clearly a ploy by the Tories to deter young people from voting. They are trying to manipulate the outcome of the elections in their favour.

There’s a whiff of desperation around the measure they’ve implemented.

The Tories are obviously fearful that their current unpopularity will be attested in the local elections.

M Smith, Chatham, Kent

■ This Government seems to believe that everyone is dishonest like them, so we now have to provide photos or letters of identification.

Will the police be present to check your identity, or will the people who have to check your polling cards also have the added responsibility?

I’m worried this may lead to attacks on them from irate voters.

M Bell, Newcastle upon Tyne

■ I believe the motivation for the Tories implementing voter ID is political and not for security reasons. This is going to be a problem for many elderly folks and also younger people who may not have the required ID.
