THE OFFICIAL RAF TRIBUTE TO THE DAMBUSTERS MARKING 80 YEARS OF THE LEGENDARY OPERATION

-

The Dambusters Raid, officially codenamed Operation Chastise, is arguably one of the most well-known and legendary raids conducted by the RAF during the Second World War.

It was 80 years ago, on the moonlit night of May 16, 1943 that nineteen specially adapted Avro Lancaster bombers, carrying their ground-breaking bouncing bombs, took off from RAF Scampton in Lincolnshire and flew into history.

The 133 dauntless airmen set out on a mission so ambitious and so risky that even to this day, it is hard to believe it is not a work of fiction. Their commitment, perseverance and sheer dogged determination in the face of dangerous and improbable odds have made the Dambusters a legend in the annals of our military history.

Capturing the drama of this daring feat of ingenuity, bravery and skill, the Dambusters 80th Anniversary Coin pays tribute to the characters, aircraft, weapons and achievements of Bomber Command’s 617 Squadron.
