ID plot won’t stop a win for Labour

-

■ GOVERNMENTS come and go, and over the decades I’ve been able to cast my vote, I’ve seen good and bad from both sides.

That being the case, I can also honestly say the current batch of Tories are the worst I’ve witnessed in every respect. And judging by the local election results it seems that millions of others agree with me. With every piece of legislation they bring forward, every policy, every parliamentary vote, including the Brexit referendum, they have only had one single beneficiary in mind – the Conservatives.

They’ve never had the interests of the British people at heart. They are a disgrace and need to be removed at the earliest opportunity before the ongoing damage to the UK becomes irreversible.

Colin Durkin, Bradford

■ It should come as no real surprise that the Tories have been dealt a considerable blow by the losses they’ve just endured in some parts of England. The results seem to indicate Labour leader Keir Starmer is heading for Downing Street, and this is despite the Tories’ underhand manoeuvre to tilt the vote in their favour by introducing mandatory photo ID at polling stations. The move backfired as Labour voters clearly weren’t put off exercising their democratic right to vote.

■ What a message the country has sent this sleazy, unwanted Tory government who suffered massive losses in the local elections. This means Labour is primed and ready for government with a clear mandate to restore public trust in our politics.

The country must now put its trusted votes behind Keir Starmer at the next general election to deliver a transparent government that really works for everyone, not just the privileged few.

Reg Barrett, Southminster, Essex

■ The new voter ID system is a mess with countless people being turned away at polling stations because they didn’t have the right identification. But it hasn’t done the Tories any good as they still did badly at the polls.

I believe this shower will go to any length to try to manipulate the vote to their advantage. But at least these results send a clear message – get out and stay out!

Dave Mellor, Warrington, Cheshire

■ Keir Starmer is dropping some of the pledges of Labour’s 2019 election manifesto, for example, the promise to scrap tuition fees. But the situation has changed in the last four years. The next general election will come down to which party is best for the UK and who will be the best prime minister.

After 13 years of Conservative misrule, this must be Labour. Melvyn Kaye, Portsmouth

■ Get in there! The Tory downfall has started and they’ve contributed heavily to their own demise. They have been a disgrace for many years, before the clapping and banging of pots and pans on the doorstep during the pandemic in a false display of support for key workers. It’s great to see them going. David Wigley Darlington, Co Durham

■ I trust all the councils that took part in Thursday’s local elections have noted how many were unable to vote because of a lack of the right form of ID. These figures should be published with the voter turnout. Mary Gazzard, Dudley, West Mids
