Right-wing coup a worrying shift

- Edited by FIONA PARKER

■ AN incoming Labour government should scrap the Tories’ repressive anti-demo laws.

Indeed, Labour would do well to have a list of all the Tory legislation of the last 13 years to be quickly repealed, from the hated bedroom tax to the needless voter ID law, and all the regressive and quite possibly illegal things in between. Otherwise, why should we bother to vote for Labour if they just carry on with Tory laws and policies?

I suspect a big reason people are turning away from the Tories, apart from incompetence, sleaze and Brexit, is a reputation for being the nasty party, as typified by Tory mouthpieces Lee Anderson and Rees-Mogg. Keir Starmer must offer real change from this.

■ It seems that voter fraud really is rife in this country, according to the number of citizens, particularly young people, denied a democratic right to vote due to having the “wrong ID”. But it’s the sitting government that’s engaged in this duplicity.

The Tories are so incompetent and unscrupulous they can’t even be bothered to hide it. I believe they are determined to sit out the end of their term at any cost, to inflict as much damage on this country as possible, to make it harder for Labour to put right. Then future Conservative governments will place the blame on Labour when it was them all along.

■ In 2017 and 2019 the establishment came out in force to ensure that the UK would not elect a socialist government under Jeremy Corbyn. I find it worrying there hasn’t been the same effort in response to an extreme right-wing coup that has seen the Conservatives lurch worryingly to the right.

What a shame moderate Tory MPs have failed to make an effort to return politics to the centre ground. There are a lot of worrying moves at the moment, including new voter ID laws, union bating and anti-protest laws. All in all, worrying times for people of the UK.

■ Recent government acts are curtailing and suppressing our right to freedom of speech as seen through the arrest of peaceful anti-monarchist protestors during the Coronation weekend.

Given the situation in the country with the cost-of-living crisis and essential workers going on strike, these measures deliberately present a false narrative.

The Government would not be wise to continue to push this so-called anti-woke agenda given the current climate and falling respect for the police. Diane Silva, Bournemouth

■ When a government resorts to changing laws to prevent voting fraud when there is none, we have a problem. The same goes for stopping people from engaging in their basic right to protest.

What has the Tory Party done to this country? We are heading towards a dictatorship.

C Smith, Coventry

■ Voter ID laws, anti-strike legislation, anti-monarchy protesters arrested and questions asked later... do people not realise hard-won democratic rights are being taken away under our noses?

Labour must promise to restore them when they get into power.

D Stapleton, Manchester

■ This Tory government is pushing through anti-strike laws, has given police extra powers to stop protests, and is barring people from voting without photo ID.

Are we still a democracy?
