My true love story

-

The course of true love never runs smooth, but after a bumpy start, Diane Littler in Newton-Le-Willows, Merseyside, got her man…

When I first met Eric at our local social club, I didn’t like him at all. But when he asked me to dance, I didn’t think it was polite to refuse.

He was such a good dancer, from old-time dancing to jive, that I decided to date him.

We courted for a couple of months but split because he “fancied” another young lady.

They broke up because she liked someone else and was only going out with Eric to make the other chap jealous. She married him in the end.

I gave Eric another chance and we started courting again after he said: “It’ll be different this time.”

I knew then we would marry. We had a son, now 56, moved to Northwood, Greater London, and bought the newsagent’s we were working in. It was only supposed to be for one year – we stayed 29 years.

We celebrated our silver wedding anniversary by retaking our vows at the Emmanuel Church and had a party for 30 people at our local squash club. As trade was falling due to the recession, we decided to move back to our hometown, and we both managed to find work. This year would have been our 61st anniversary and he would have been 87.

I lost him to Covid in January 2021. I still cry and miss him so much. He really was my other half. When we were in our shop together, we were often asked how we could live and work together, and our reply was simply, “We love each other.”
