True colours of Rwanda ‘rebels’

- Edited by FIONA PARKER

WITH at least three Conservative rebel groups joining forces to back amendments to the Rwanda Bill, it shows just how split this Government is.

Just as Theresa May’s political obituary was written by Brexit, and Boris Johnson’s by Partygate and sleaze, could lame duck Rishi Sunak be next for the chop?

The Government still won’t come clean about how much has been paid to Rwanda already. Shadow Home Secretary Yvette Cooper estimates the Government has pledged almost £400million which only further underlines how unfit for office the Tories are.

With Lee Anderson having quit as the party’s deputy chair and more Tory MPs on resignation watch, Sunak should think twice before making future plans.

Geoffrey Brooking, Havant, Hants

■ Once again the Tories show their true colours. Before the Rwanda vote there was endless bluster about how many rebels would vote against Rishi Sunak’s deal – and yet it passed by more than 40 votes. I predicted this as you cannot believe what the Tories say. They are in office to serve themselves and make the rich richer and if it means running the country into the ground so be it. If they win the election it will be the voters’ fault.

Harold Ennis Ruardean, Glos

■ Tory dissenters backing down over Sunak’s Rwanda plan rather than toppling it shows who they really care about. But it’s not that they have a long career ahead of them – they’re just

putting a nail in their party’s coffin. Sunak hasn’t a chance of winning the election.

Geoff Willmetts Bridgwater, Somerset

■ This Rwanda Bill is a dangerous gimmick that shames us all. Why can’t there be more safe and legal routes rather than this infamous policy? It’s so dehumanising and depressing and won’t deter the boats because desperate people will take desperate measures, such as the five who drowned last weekend. It appears to be Rwanda or bust with no other compassionate or ethical policies considered. It’s time the Government read the room. Most decent people want a fair and just system.

Judith Daniels Great Yarmouth, Norfolk

■ There is something seriously flawed about the Rwanda plan. We are told it’s a safe country yet we have granted asylum to Rwandans.

It defies logic that, in exchange for our money, Rwanda will take some of our asylum seekers and in return, as well as giving Rwanda hundreds of millions of our money,

we’re expected to take some of theirs. The Tories should do what they did to the Northern leg of HS2 - and dump the plan.

Chris Torode, Richmond, North Yorks

■ The 1951 Geneva Convention states there is no requirement for migrants to seek asylum in the first safe country they reach – which is the stance the Government takes.

Time after time Tory MPs misquote this detail. Can they not understand migrants choose the UK because they speak English or have relatives and friends here?

The thought of settling in a country where you don’t speak the language and all the problems that brings must be overwhelming so who can blame them?

Ronnie Starkey, Norwich

■ Surely the most effective way to stop migrants coming here is for the French government to ban the sale of the boats, ending the criminals’ lucrative trade.

If the migrants know there will be no more boats they will stay in their own countries.
