TORIES clashed over ditching doomed PM Rishi Sunak in scenes more suited to closing time at the Queen Vic than the House of Commons.

Mr Sunak faced ridicule as Labour leader Keir Starmer likened the squabbling to the “longest episode of EastEnders ever”.

Amid loud shouts from Tory MPs, Mr Starmer smirked: “I love this quaint tradition where the more they slag him off behind his back, the louder they cheer in here.”

Like EastEnders’ feuding Mitchell and Butcher families, the party descended into melodramatic infighting after former minister Sir Simon Clarke called on his colleagues to oust Mr Sunak. Supporters of the PM labelled him “self-indulgent”, “facile”, “divisive” and “unwise” for warning the party faces “massacre” at the polls. But Sir Simon hit back, declaring: “Personal insults don’t change the facts.” In an interview with BBC last night, he said: “No one likes that guy who’s shouting ‘iceberg!’ but I

Clarke and Starmer suspect that people will be even less happy if we hit the iceberg.”

The Tory, who is a close ally of 50-day PM Liz Truss, insisted he is acting alone and is not part of an orchestrated plot. He repeatedly declined to say who he wants to become Tory leader.

Tory MPs including Ms Truss are preparing to start a new group, Popular Conservatism, nicknamed PopCon. She will appear at a launch event next month alongside Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg.

Home Secretary James Cleverly yesterday warned his colleagues against ousting Mr Sunak, saying: “All it would do is open the door for Keir Starmer.” Post Minister Kevin Hollinrake insisted Sir Simon’s view is not widely held. VOICE OF THE MIRROR: PAGE 4

THE Tory party’s infighting and feuding was yesterday compared to EastEnders.

But Rishi Sunak couldn’t run the Queen Vic, let alone a country.

He would be met with shouts of: “Rishaaay, you’re bang out of order.”
