PO guilty must all face justice

- Edited by FIONA PARKER

■ Regarding the way the poor subpostmasters have been treated, anyone with a grain of intelligence and empathy would have known there was something gravely wrong with the new Horizon system.

You don’t suddenly find hundreds of people – who’ve run their business honestly for years – having problems without good reason. Did top management have no common sense?

For them to then lie and suggest to each person that they were the only one with accounting problems is disgusting. All those involved in the scandal and cover up should be made to repay any bonuses and have their pensions annulled.

How can they live with the knowledge that some people were so distraught they took their own life? Those responsible should all be named and shamed. I hope all the victims feel at last they have a voice after years of agony.

■ The Post Office scandal just gets worse the longer the inquiry goes on. It beggars belief that investigators were set targets and paid bonuses to claw money back from the wrongly accused subpostmasters and mistresses. Then there is the very serious matter of lying to MPs by top tier management. Those involved must be held to account and pay the price for their misdeeds which have cast a shadow over the lives of these innocent people for more than 20 years.

■ I can’t believe that in the years since the problem with Horizon was first spotted, nothing was done about Fujitsu’s involvement in the Post Office scandal. I also can’t believe that so little progress was made until the ITV programme Mr Bates vs the Post Office.

Fujitsu must pay everyone prosecuted a substantial sum over and above what the Government should pay. And the top people need to face justice, but I doubt very much this will happen.

■ I read with interest the story in your sister paper the Sunday Mirror about the Post Office chiefs partying at the height of the scandal ( Jan 21). No surprise there. Now we hear about proposals to stop Saturday deliveries.

Our postal service has been hit and miss for the past six months with letters lost, including important documents. It seems the Post Office and Royal Mail just don’t care about their customers anymore.

■ If there is one overriding thing I have learned from the Post Office scandal it is that justice seems only to be available for whoever can afford the most expensive legal representation.

That the taxpayer should have paid the bill for this appalling miscarriage of justice leaves a very nasty taste.

Stuart Magrath, Wigan

■ How corrupt can a firm be when they knew they had glitches in their system yet continued to keep quiet and let innocent people be charged? Some even went to jail in the Post Office scandal. Any managers involved should be brought to book.

And it’s an absolute disgrace that the Government still has contracts with Fujitsu.

Alan Robinson, Liverpool

■ I take my hat off to the Daily Mirror for your coverage of the Post Office scandal. Fujitsu knew their faulty system was destroying lives as subpostmasters were sent to jail, but only after a TV drama exposes them do they apologise.

Yet the Government has continued to give Fujitsu lucrative contracts. Unbelievable.

Will Forrow, Dawlish, Devon

■ I totally agree with RF Wills who says Rees-Zammit will be a great loss to Welsh rugby (Your Voice, January 22).

He’s a great asset to the Welsh team. I will miss him at this year’s Six Nations but wish him all the best for his future in the NFL.
