Volunteer we go
Youth step up for a Big Help Out challenge
NEARLY half of 18-24s want to help others by volunteering, research has revealed.
So this year’s The Big Help Out, launched today, will have a particular focus on providing volunteer opportunities for young people.
More than seven million took part in last year’s Big Help Out – getting together to make a difference to their communities.
King Charles is supporting the event again, this year to be held over three days from Friday, June 7 to Sunday, June 9, at the climax of Volunteers’ Week.
Including a weekday for the first time will give schools and workplaces the chance to get involved.
The King said: “I am delighted to support the return of the Big Help Out in 2024. This summer there will be another opportunity to join so many dedicated volunteers in giving time to a worthy cause.”
He said roles could include supporting a foodbank, tending a community garden, spending time with a vulnerable person or teaching young people.
Organisations are invited to register their volunteering opportunities on the Big Help Out app, while potential volunteers are asked to pledge a day of their time to get involved.
Last year, there were more than 50,000 events across the country.
Supporter and astronaut Tim Peake said: “Tens of thousands of charities, community groups and clubs will be offering you the chance to try something new.
“So whether it’s taking a group stargazing in Southampton or helping out at a foodbank in Fife, there’s something for everyone.”
Fellow supporter Anneka Rice added: “Volunteering isn’t just a great way to help your community – it’s good for the volunteer too. “Good for our mental health and self-esteem, a great way to meet new people and to expand your own horizons.”
