THE Daily Mirror today launches a petition demanding everyone can access NHS dentistry as a Government rescue plan was slammed.

Dentists said the blueprint – finally unveiled 10 months after it was first promised – will fail to end the crisis.

The British Dental Association said the proposals “won’t halt the exodus from the workforce”.

It comes as hundreds of people queued for a second day outside a new dental practice in St Pauls, Bristol, trying to register for NHS treatment.

Under the plan to be announced today, dentists will be offered cash incentives to see patients who haven’t had an appointment in two years.

Teams will go to schools to teach children how to brush and new parents will be advised on baby gums. Dental vans will be deployed to rural areas, and dentists will be offered £20,000 to move to where there are shortages.

Shawn Charlwood, of the BDA, said: “This ‘Recovery Plan’ is not worthy of the title. It won’t halt the exodus from the workforce or offer hope to millions struggling to access care.”

The NHS said the £200million plan may mean up to 2.5 million extra appointments are offered next year.

More than 12 million people were unable to get dental care last year – more than one in four adults in England. The Mirror is campaigning to get dental access for all.

THE huge queue in Bristol to register with an NHS dentist vividly illustrated the pain endured around the country.

The service is in crisis and millions of us are unable to receive the prompt, affordable treatment we should be getting.

To add extra bite to our campaign to save NHS dentistry, today the Daily Mirror launches a petition demanding that everybody be guaranteed access to a local NHS dentist. Please take time to find and sign it online. With the Government’s latest “rescue” plan dismissed as toothless, either we all fight for better care or the rot will worsen.
