RISHI RICH SNEAKS OUT HIS TAX RETURN
PM made more than £2.2m last year
RISHI Sunak has lifted the lid on his vast wealth as he revealed he made more than £2.2million last year.
The super-rich Prime Minister snuck out a summary of his tax return late yesterday afternoon as MPs were on their holidays.
The document shows he paid a tax bill of £508,308 in the financial year 2022-23.
His vast income included £1.8million in capital gains from a US investment fund, and £293,407 in other interest and dividends.
He also received £139,477 in salary as an MP and the PM. Mr Sunak paid an effective tax rate of 22.8% on his £2.2m income, which is the same rate as paid by a teacher on an average salary of £41,604, according to Tax Justice UK. Robert Palmer, of the advocacy group, said: “People will be shocked to learn the Prime Minister has such a low tax rate. But this is a feature of our broken tax system. “Someone who earns most of their money from their wealth – like the Prime Minister – pays a much lower tax rate than someone who relies on going out to work for their living.”
Chancellor Jeremy Hunt also published a summary of his tax return that showed he made £416,605. He paid £117,418 in income tax and capital gains tax.
The PM and his wife Akshata Murty are the richest inhabitants of Downing
Street with an estimated £520m fortune, according to the Sunday Times Rich List. This week Mr Sunak was branded out of touch for agreeing to a £1,000 bet on whether deportation flights to Rwanda will begin before the election. And he is under pressure to come clean over whether he uses an NHS dentist. The PM’s spokesman said: “It’s a choice for the PM on whether he wants to speak about that or not.”
