Sunak’s sunk to a new low

-

■ That PM Rishi Sunak repeatedly refused to apologise for his crass comment about trans people just about sums up his government’s attitude (Mirror, February 8).

Their performance in office has broken Britain and brought the country to its knees, yet they rate themselves as good to outstanding.

An Ofsted inspection would put them straight into special measures and in industry, the CEO would have been ordered to clear his desk.

The sickening fact is that in the run up to the general election, the British people will be subject to a barrage of lies, culture wars and insults to their intelligence as the Tories desperately try to save their own skins and hold onto power.

■ Are there no depths to which Rishi Sunak will not sink in order to score cheap points? Not content with placing a £1,000 bet on his ability to deport desperate and frightened people to Rwanda, he made a “joke” about transgender people on the day the bereaved mother of Brianna Ghey was in the House.

Worse, he refused to apologise as did the ministers appearing on TV the following day. In fact, they appeared to try to justify it. Sunak should resign immediately.

■ Theresa May said she was worried about the Conservative Party being known as the Nasty Party. I don’t think you can now find a printable adjective to describe their current

behaviour. They have brought our country to a new low.

Over the last 14 years it’s hard to think of anything that has been done where the people’s needs have been put before their own.

■ So, to top off a bad week, Rishi Sunak made an offensive remark about trans people while the mother of murdered Brianna Ghey was visiting Westminster as he attempted to score points off Keir Starmer.

This really is scraping the bottom of the barrel when you consider the disasters the Tories have presided over during the past 14 years – from the catastrophe of HS2, the nurses, rail and junior doctors’ strikes, the immigration debacle and now the lack of NHS dentists.

If Sunak thinks the Tories stand a chance at the next election he’s in cloud cuckoo land.

■ Having watched Esther Ghey being interviewed by Laura Kuenssberg, I have so much admiration for her. She has shown such compassion and empathy towards

Brianna’s killers and should be lauded for her response.

Esther is correct too that social media has to be given urgent attention to prevent teenagers accessing harmful content. Having said this, it’s to our PM’s shame that he failed to show any regard or compassion for Esther who was visiting the House of Commons on the day.

The contrast could not be more stark.

■ The current Government is in ruins. In their tenure they have chosen to fill their own and their friends’ pockets and ignored just about everything and everyone else – especially anywhere north of Luton. All the public wants is fairness, truth and integrity, something sadly lacking with that lot. Guy Middlewood, York

■ Rishi Sunak’s insensitive remark shows the contemptible Tories for what they are. They are prepared to drag politics into the gutter with their culture wars. I just hope Keir Starmer is prepared because the next election is going to be nasty. D Coombes, Bridgwater, Somerset
