Tax cuts won’t fix a recession

-

■ WHAT planet are the terminal Tories on? They are the ones responsible for the Truss-trashed economy, the wastelands of the NHS and dental waiting lists, and the mortgage and housing crisis, to name but a few.

Ask yourself, will a few extra quid in my pocket from a tax-cut bribe solve the utter mess of a recession the country now finds itself in? Or are we all in this together to demand that this money would be better spent on services which benefit everybody, and offer help and hope to people whose daily struggle condemns them to despair?

The Tories blew any credibility they might have had a long time ago and they must be removed from office as soon as possible. John Sedgwick Tamworth, Staffs

■ It is being widely reported the Conservatives are planning tax cuts in the forthcoming Budget in a desperate effort to get more people to vote for them whenever they eventually decide to go to the polls.

At the same time, council tax will be rising by a significant amount, everyone with a mobile phone or broadband service will see their bills increase by inflation (4%) plus 3.9%, and road tax is also rising.

How on earth does Rishi Sunak think that a small tax cut will make up for all these rises? Once again smoke and mirrors – what the Conservatives giveth, they also taketh away. Barry Foster, Wigan

■ Can anyone explain why the Tories are so obsessed with tax cuts, believing they will win them the general election?

Let’s put things into perspective. A reduction in NI will only benefit the 25% of workers who actually earn the “alleged” average annual salary of £35k. A 1p cut in income tax will benefit nobody who doesn’t earn that as this will be wiped out by the increase in council tax. So don’t be fooled people. Tax cuts will still make the majority worse off. Chris Torode, Richmond

■ Tory chancellor Jeremy Hunt’s promised tax cuts are no more than a cynical pre-election bribe. They are promises made instead of using any of our ‘spare’ cash to invest in the NHS/infrastructure/ schools or to pay victims of the contaminated blood scandal, Post Office scandal or WASPI Women.

He would rather use it to keep his crooked government destroying our country for another five years. Steve Cox, Tonna, Neath Port Talbot

■ These Tories think they can buy their way into another term in government by tax cuts for all.

No government can keep giving away money like there’s no tomorrow or pretty soon there will be no tomorrow.

Tony Howard, Salford

■ Do the Tories really think that voters are stupid, and willing to vote for them for the privilege of what is looking like a 1% tax cut?

There is a cost of living crisis right now and a recession which could lead to job losses.

This is all their fault - that measly tax cut won’t make a dent. Bring on a Labour government! Becca King, London

■ While I would welcome a tax cut, our public services are currently at breaking point and we need to fund the National Health Service and bolster our Armed Forces.

We can’t afford to cut spending on health and safety. Natasha Weaver, Southampton
