JAMIE HONOURS HIS LATE MUM
JAMIE GEORGE will not let emotions get the better of him today at Murrayfield, according to England attack coach Richard Wigglesworth.
The skipper (above) spoke movingly on Thursday about the recent death of his mother Jane, and how he would be motivated by her memory against Scotland. But Wigglesworth, who played with George at Saracens, says the hooker can keep a lid on it and has been impressed by his captaincy this week despite the tragedy.
Wigglesworth said: “Jamie’s handled it how he’s handled it, it’s not a concern. You saw how he spoke about it and he’s shown great leadership.
“So, the absolute minimum we can do is try and repay him for what he has given to English rugby. It’s just a testament to him and the group how we want to look after him and support him. He’s an open and honest guy, that’s how he wants to lead, that’s what suits him best and we’ve seen that from him in the last few weeks, particularly in the circumstances of this week.”
An England win would mark the first time they have won three games in a Six Nations since 2020 but Wigglesworth (left) thinks it would be a big enough win its own right. He added: “It would be a significant win because it’s Scotland away. We know what a good team they are and any international win away would be significant. I don’t know if we see it as a staging post because we’re very early on in our plan of where we want to take this England team.
“With staging posts, you can maybe look back and think ‘that was a moment.’ It would be great if this was one, but we probably won’t know that for a while yet.
“We want this one to go our way.”
Scotland are the 4-7 favourites, with England around the 8-5 mark.
