Why Anderson row suits Sunak

- Edited by FIONA PARKER

■ THE Conservative Party has been hijacked by right-wing zealots who’s Islamophobic smokescreen is akin to the rhetoric of desperate Donald Trump.

The Tories reckon they are inundated by Red Wall voters who agree with the vile rants of Lee Anderson – but most northerners are decent, fair-minded people who share the national spirit of generosity which is evident in the welcome we give to the desperate Ukrainian refugees.

If people believe they are being left behind and want someone to blame, they need to look no further than this Government’s disastrous policies which have dragged us to the cliff edge. Their nastiness is simply them just trying to save their own skin when they know the game is up.

John Sedgwick, Tamworth, Staffs

■ It seems to me that Sunak is willing to turn a blind eye to Tories perpetuating Islamophobia when he knows that very few Tory seats depend on Muslim votes. He would rather pander to the right-wing in his party as he sees it as an opportunity to stir resentment in the Red Wall seats to try to keep Labour out. Shameful.

Steve Cox, Tonna, Neath Port Talbot

■ As a non-partisan voter, I have no truck with racism of any form. The reality is Lee Anderson is being paid £100,000 a year by right-wing channel GB News which delights in creating divisions in our society. People aren’t born racist, they learn it from those around them and from social media - and the likes of Anderson. GB News should be closed for bringing UK broadcasting to such a new low.

Collin Rossini Dovercourt, Essex

■ Unless this Government gets a grip on Lee Anderson and Liz Truss, Britain will find itself led by these right wing loonies.

Neither of them are concerned about this country, only themselves and keeping their well paid jobs. Surely, people can see what these two are trying to do?

Elise Ellison, Hartlepool, County Durham

■ Over the last 14 years the Tories’ failure to invest in Britain has meant they have devastated the NHS, our Armed Forces, education and our council services with their austerity policies.

The cost of living crisis and Sunak’s recession have left millions of workers spending more than they earn to pay the highest taxes for generations. Meanwhile the wealthy continue to get wealthier.

To deflect from this dreadful record the Tories will spend the next few months bribing voters with unfunded tax cuts and accusing Labour of being unpatriotic. Don’t be fooled. It is the Tories and Reform that are the threat to the best of British values. Brett Grainger, Rugeley, Staffs

■ When people start mud-slinging I always think there is a lot of deflection going on. The likes of Lee Anderson are dragging Britain to a new low with their dog whistle politics. But people can see them for what they are.

Sandra Rowan Berwick, Northumberland

■ I agree with reader Harry Duffin – we must protest against the Tories (Your Voice, Feb 27). It seems people have been beaten into submission in the last 14 years and have lost the strength to fight for what they believe in.

It also worries me that a lot of people won’t have the proper ID to vote when we have a General Election and that some have just given up. We need to let the Tories know how we feel.
