Cheryl backs a Bucks Fizz stage musical

A BUCKS Fizz musical is coming to the West End with Cheryl Baker backing former EastEnders star Maisie Smith to play her.

The show is the brainchild of Nichola Martin, who helped create the Eurovision winners in late 1980.

It will document the rollercoaster ride the group went on, although Cheryl does not believe it will be along the same lines as the hugely popular ABBA musical.

The 69-year-old says: “Our story is quite remarkable really.

“I don’t think it’s going to be like Mama Mia! I don’t think it’s going to be a jukebox-type musical. I think it is actually gigged to be about the story of Bucks Fizz and the ups and the massive downs that we’ve had in our careers, and it’s being written now as we speak.

“The whole concept of it has come from the woman who put Bucks Fizz together, Nichola Martin. It’s possibly coming in the autumn of this year or early next year.” As for who would play Cheryl: “She’s got to be a bit of a cockney. Maisie would be great.”

The musical will be written by Darren Hatch, son of EXCITED Cheryl Baker composer Tony, who is arguably best known for penning the Neighbours and Emmerdale theme tunes.

Bucks Fizz, who comprised Cheryl, Jay Aston, Mike Nolan and Bobby G, shot to stardom in 1981 when they won Eurovision with Making Your Mind Up. Three years later, the band were involved in a horrific tour bus crash in Newcastle, which left Mike with a nearfatal brain injury.

More recently, they have been involved in a series of legal wrangles, with Bobby winning the rights to the Bucks Fizz name, leaving the re-formed trio of Cheryl, Jay and Mike having to perform as The Fizz.
