Tories to blame for extremism

- FIONA PARKER

■ HOW dare Rishi Sunak lecture us on our democratic values? He doesn’t understand the meaning of the word. If he did, how could he have taken up the position of PM?

Has he forgotten he was roundly rejected in favour of the useless Liz Truss? Since Sunak and his cronies came to power they have failed at every turn. All opinion polls indicate the Government is deeply unpopular yet he persists in staying in power as if he actually believes he’s doing a good job.

Then he has the brass neck to stand in front of 10 Downing Street and claim he wants to unite us all and that people protesting against Gaza are a threat. They aren’t the threat, it’s Sunak and his bigoted, incompetent and sleaze-ridden cronies who are.

We need an immediate general election to hopefully elect some decent MPs.

Edward Lyon, Sandown Isle of Wight

■ Rishi Sunak stood outside Downing Street and said he would fight the extremist forces that were tearing us apart, and the shocking rise in disruption, criminality and extremism spreading racialism and discrimination. What planet does this man live on? He leads the most right-wing, bigoted and abject government in modern history.

The continuing policies of austerity and cuts to council services and the NHS are at the root of all our problems, plus Tory MPs like Lee Anderson – who told people they can make a meal for 30p – making

crass comments. The PM needs to put his own party in order and then call a general election.

Catherine Smith, Coventry

■ Before Rishi Sunak lectures the country about extremism, he should deal with the problems in his own party. After all, the likes of Boris Johnson, Lee Anderson, Suella Braverman and Liz Truss aren’t exactly known for their moderate views.

Remember that Boris Johnson likened Muslim women covering their faces to letterboxes, while Lee Anderson has made Islamophobic comments and Suella Braverman incited the far right.

If Rishi Sunak wants to stop hatred spreading, he should start with the rhetoric coming from his own MPs and supporters.

Geoffrey Brooking, Havant, Hants

■ Can I remind Rishi Sunak of the nasty and divisive comments his ex-partner in crime Boris Johnson made about Muslim women and Lee Anderson’s recent remarks about Sadiq Khan? I suggest Sunak looks at the policies he and his

government have implemented which have greatly contributed to the deep divisions in society over the past 14 catastrophic years.

John White

North Wingfield, Derbys

■ PM Rishi Sunak delivers a speech condemning the rise of extremism in the UK but it is only the end result of years of scapegoating of Muslims, migrants, the disabled, the unemployed and the left by Conservative governments since 2010 that have led to this.

Phil Brand, South West London

■ It’s rich of Rishi Sunak to lecture us about extremist forces seeking to divide our society when it’s the Tory architects of the “hostile environment” that have caused this extremism and hatred to spread within our communities. How hypocritical can you be? Michelle Rogers, Brighton

■ If anyone is tearing our country apart, it’s the Tories. They are so out of touch. The poor get poorer while the rich get richer under this elitist party.
