Aid by sea plan shames Israel
■ The intention of the international community to get humanitarian aid into Gaza by sea is admirable, but it’s only necessary because of Israel’s refusal to allow enough aid to enter by land.
The USA is the main supporter of Israel, so Joe Biden needs to put more pressure on Netanyahu to halt the destruction and let aid in.
Netanyahu’s goal of a military defeat of terrorism is as unachievable as it was for apartheid South Africa to defeat the ANC or for the UK to defeat the IRA.
Only compromise by both sides can resolve this difficult and complex situation. Israel’s violence in Gaza - and incursions into the West Bank - will only create more violence, not less.
Brett Grainger, Rugeley, Staffs
■ It is going to take too long to get aid into Gaza by sea.
I believe the only way to stop the suffering is a UN peacekeeping force taking over the distribution of aid. The Israel Defence Forces would not shoot at a convoy manned by UN troops.
Carol Dent, Llanbedr, Gwynedd
■ Babies dying from malnutrition in Gaza is heartbreaking (Mirror, March 9).
Both sides need to stop this intransigence and reconsider their position to end this suffering of innocent civilians. While Benjamin Netanyahu rightly faces condemnation for the continuing bombardment of the Strip, it was Hamas that caused this latest catastrophe with their vile attacks of October 7. Israel can never
feel safe if Hamas still holds power in Gaza. Although the future looks bleak, we have to believe there is hope for peace somewhere.

■ In these days of a world hurtling towards conflict, there are voices of peace and unity amongst us.
If marchers seek to divide, as some politicians and commentators are so eager to portray, then the sheer numbers and diversity among of those taking part in the pro-Palestine marches shows there is a common unifying factor – human compassion and fairness irrespective of religion or race.
The tension caused by conflicts miles away have a ripple effect here and elsewhere. In this global village that is our world today, it’s naive to think we won’t be affected.

■ The British public have an innate sense of justice, fair play and humanity – and when they feel their Government is acting against their values, they march.
For prominent members of the
Tory Party to disrespect marches to support a ceasefire in Gaza by calling them ‘hate’ or Islamist marches is stirring up trouble.
The police have the powers and the experience to deal with the few who regularly cause trouble so Mr Sunak should leave them to their job and get on with his.
Sheila Wilkes, Helston, Cornwall
■ Tories claiming protests against the imminent starvation of millions in Gaza are extremist is a complete distraction to try to stop their wipe-out in the next election.
This Government shames Westminster’s reputation as the Mother of all Parliaments.
These scoundrels will do anything to cling to power, no matter how grubby.
Collin Rossini, Dovercourt, Essex
■ While what is going on in Gaza is truly appalling, let’s not lose sight of the fact it was the actions of Hamas that instigated this latest catastrophe. We must not forget the men, women and children attacked by Hamas on October 7. Steve Cox
