Chancer Lee will soon be history

- Edited by FIONA PARKER

Anyone wondering why people in this country have such a low opinion of politicians need look no further than Lee Anderson – a man whose allegiance, to quote American lyricist Tom Lehrer, is ruled by expedience.

Originally staunch Labour, he switched to the Conservatives when he saw which way the wind was blowing before the 2019 election and got to Westminster on Boris Johnson’s coat tails.

Having switched from left to right he has since moved to the far right and Reform UK. Along the way he has demonstrated a talent for talking nonsense such as saying a family can be fed on 30p a day and there’s no need for foodbanks.

Then there’s his hypocrisy. He was opposed to MPs having second jobs until he was offered a reported £100,000 to host a show on GB News and he couldn’t get his snout in the trough fast enough.

He also favoured an automatic by-election being called if an MP switched parties, so will he be stepping down? Of course not. The only hope is the next general election will see the end of this appalling chancer – and good riddance. John Lee, St Ives, Cambs

■ Can anyone determine Lee Anderson’s politics? The problem is he makes headlines and his offensive comments are quietly supported by the new right-wing group led by Liz Truss and co.

On the same day that Anderson switched to Reform UK, it was revealed Frank Hester made a disgusting remark about the very hard-working ex-Labour MP Diane Abbott. This is the same guy who made a £10 million donation to the Tories. How much more proof do voters need that the nasty party is becoming more influenced by a growing number of right-wing politicians and their supporters? I say bring on the election and let the red wall engulf them. John White, Chesterfield, Derbys

■ So, Lee Anderson has defected from the Tories to join up with Reform UK. This will be his second switch to another party. He is clearly only interested in his own self-advancement and shuns any sense of loyalty or integrity.

Sunak must be afraid Anderson’s abrupt exit might persuade others in the party to follow suit. The Conservatives must be holding their breath in anticipation of worse to come. Michael Smith, Chatham, Kent

■ Britain is so bitterly divided that common sense no longer prevails. 30p Lee Anderson is once again changing sides, probably because he has little chance of retaining his seat come the forthcoming general election. He proclaims he wants his country back! So do I, Lee, the one I grew up in and cherished as a child. The best way ahead I can see is to kick as many Tories out of the Commons as possible because they have wrecked this once proud country for more than a decade. Bill Cook, Teignmouth, Devon

■ How confusing was it to hear Lee Anderson’s justification for leaving the Conservative Party? “I want my country back!” he said.

Well, just to make sure, I went onto Google Maps and, just as I suspected, it hasn’t gone anywhere, it’s still where it’s always been. Keith Moore, Goole, East Yorks

■ So, Lee Anderson has decided to join Reform UK. This guy has had more parties than Boris Johnson! I’m sure the people of Ashfield are just hoping that come the next general election, they won’t have a member of the Raving Loony party as their MP. Ronnie Starkey, Norwich

■ 30p Lee should be expelled from Parliament as he isn’t representing the people who voted for him. The man is a disgrace to politics changing parties three times. Angela Brown, Manchester
