We pick up £8bn bill of Tory chaos

- BY JOHN STEVENS Political Editor

LABOUR has warned the Conservatives are addicted to chaos, as they leave voters with an £8billion bill.

The party’s campaign chief Pat McFadden said the turmoil will only continue if the Tories cling to power.

He highlighted how taxpayers are being hit by soaring mortgage costs, repeated by-elections, and the decision to scrap the northern leg of HS2.

The Tory immigration chaos has also led to the Home Office needing a £2.6bn bailout for hotels for asylum seekers, while the decision not to hold a general election on May 2 will cost £33m.

Mr McFadden, right, said: “Rishi Sunak has presided over a Conservative Party in chaos and saddled the taxpayer with the bill.

“The country needs change and it is a Labour government that will deliver it.”

Over 1.4million homeowners are due to come to the end of fixed mortgage deals in the coming financial year, with repayments typically increasing by £240 a month.

According to Labour analysis, this will leave them paying a total of £4.1bn extra next year.

Eight by-elections have been called in previously Tory-held seats under Mr Sunak.

Holding one typically costs £250,000.

And an estimated £33m has been lost by not holding the general election on May 2 – the same day as local polls.

Mr Sunak announced the HS2 high-speed rail line will stop at Birmingham, after at least £1.4bn was spent on a northern leg.

The figures pile further pressure on Prime Minister Mr Sunak and Chancellor Jeremy Hunt.

Mr McFadden told the Mirror: “The only way to liberate the country from the pattern of recent years and put an end to the cost of Tory chaos is to end their period in power.”
