Shame of Sunak dishonours list

-

■ THE latest honours list yet again proves that the present unelected Prime Minister foisted on the country is of the same mould as most of the Tory government.

Standing in front of No 10, Rishi Sunak churned out the usual rhetoric about leading with honesty and integrity – but when push comes to shove he reverts to his true colours and rewards anyone who has either put money into his party’s pockets or who might be useful to him or the Tories in the future.

The sooner we get the opportunity to consign this self-serving bunch of so-called honourable ladies and gentlemen of the Tory party to history the better for the country and all concerned. Anthony Probert Ross-on-Wye Herefordshire

■ Rishi Sunak has now created a rod for his own back. Mohamed Mansour donated £5million to the Tories in 2023. Lo and behold he is given a knighthood in honours awards out of normal.

The electorate will never believe this was not a cash for honours award. Not only that, he has given knighthoods/damehoods to MPs, and threw a few others in to cover cronyism. Of course, there is the possibility Sunak intends to call an election soon, and outgoing PMs are allowed to award honours. Whatever his thoughts, sneaking them out in the Easter recess is underhand. Chris Torode Richmond, North Yorks

■ Fact One: Mohamed Mansour gives Rishi Sunak’s Tory party £5 million. Fact Two: Rishi Sunak gives Mohamed Mansour a knighthood.

There are dark and scandalous mutterings of honours for sale but that can’t possibly be true, can it?

After all, this is the Sunak who stood outside No10 and promised a Government of integrity, professionalism and accountability.

But in the unlikely event there is a connection and the going rate for a knighthood really is £5m then Frank Hester, who has bunged Sunak more than £10m plus free helicopter rides, should be in line for at least a peerage.

That is once the fuss over allegedly saying Diane Abbott “should be shot” has died down.

Readers should keep an eye out for Sunak’s (dis)honours list when he resigns or is kicked out, whichever comes first, and check for a Lord Hester. At least then we will know the honours system is working as it should. John Lee, St Ives, Cambridgeshire

■ Once again the international joke called the “honours” list has included Tory Party cronies, sneaked in while no one was looking. It is time this joke ended.

If we are going to keep an honours list it should be taken away from party leaders and an independent body should be elected to make decisions on who has served the community, saved lives etc – leaving friends, supporters or donors out of it. Catherine McChleery, Coventry

■ The Tories have made a total mockery of the “honours” system. You give us loads of money and we’ll give you a knighthood. King Charles should have the right to refuse these honours. It’s an archaic system which should be abolished and replaced with a democratically elected chamber. Pam Crouzieres Basingstoke, Hants

■ These Tories are way behind the times when they give out knighthoods to their friends and cronies.

Honours like these 50 years ago were something good to have before your name – but nowadays they are two a penny. People used to treat anyone called Sir or Lady with respect, but not now as many given those titles got them because they bought them. Tony Howard, Salford
