NO PHILL-GOOD FACTOR FOR KAL
attempt at reviving his career took another blow after he gave away a penalty then flipped one fan his middle finger as West Ham surrendered a 3-1 lead to lose 4-3 at Newcastle.
It’s been a struggle for the former Leeds star since he quit Elland Road for a move to Manchester City in 2022. Now, as his loan to the Hammers is going wrong, we look at five other moves that failed to spark.
ALEXIS SANCHEZ TO MAN UNITED
Sanchez was one of the best players in the Premier League when he completed his move to Man United from Arsenal.
But the Chilean later revealed that he wanted to leave the Red Devils after just one training session, and this was evident on the pitch from his debut until he left 18 months later, scoring just three goals.
FERNANDO TORRES TO CHELSEA
Torres’ British record transfer fee of £50million when he switched from Liverpool to Chelsea in January 2011 shocked everyone – as did his performances for the Blues.
His time at Chelsea included goal droughts of 903 minutes in his first season, 24 games in the next and 11 hours in his third campaign at Stamford Bridge.
ANDY CARROLL TO LIVERPOOL
In January 2011, as Torres went out of Liverpool, Andy Carroll came in.
The £35million-man arrived from Newcastle with a lot of excitement attached to his name, but in his first season with the Reds, he only found the back of the net twice.
He managed to lift the League Cup during his time at Anfield and scored some important goals in Liverpool’s 2012 FA Cup campaign, but only managed a measly 11 goals in total.
EDEN HAZARD TO REAL MADRID
The deal that Real Madrid struck with Chelsea which could have seen them paying in excess of £150million shows just how good Eden Hazard was at the time. Yet the Belgian only scored seven times in 76 appearances for Los Blancos, highlighting just how sour this transfer turned out.
DANNY DRINKWATER TO CHELSEA
After the miracle of winning the Premier League with Leicester City, Chelsea decided to take a £35m punt on Danny Drinkwater.
He made just 23 appearances in the three years he was contracted there, scoring just one goal.
After failed loans and brief periods in the Championship with Reading and in Turkey, the midfielder retired aged just 33.
