NO APOLOGIES FOR CHANGE OF STYLE SAYS GAB

- BY JEREMY CROSS

GABRIEL JESUS is still dreaming of helping Arsenal land a double this season.

Mikel Arteta’s men held champions Manchester City to a goalless draw at the Etihad to remain in the thick of the title race.

Arsenal are two points behind league leaders Liverpool with nine games to go, and have also reached the Champions League quarter-finals.

The Gunners have never won the European Cup and have not been crowned English champions in two decades. But Jesus sees no reason why Arsenal cannot land the biggest trophies this season.

The Brazilian forward said: “It’s the Premier League. It’s a tough league and anything can happen.

“It is only two points the difference with Liverpool, but we have a very good goal difference. Everything counts, and there are still a lot of games.

“We also have the Champions League.

“This is the most beautiful part of the season, and you try everything to win titles.”

Arsenal have been criticised for their negative tactics at the Etihad to frustrate Pep Guardiola’s side.

But Jesus reckons Arteta’s men did what they had to do to avoid defeat – and showed how much they’ve matured in the last 12 months.

Arsenal were thrashed 4-1 in the same fixture last season.

Jesus (with boss Arteta, top) said: “To play big games, you have to sometimes change your body language.

“To go there is not easy. We tried to win, and I think we could have won. Maybe we played a different game to what we normally do, but sometimes football is like this.

“Each game is different. We had some chances. We could have scored and maybe won, but that’s football. We take the point.

“We went there last season and suffered a lot. We conceded goals and made some mistakes.

“This time it was a bit different. We knew from the start that, at some point, we had to suffer a little playing deep. “They are a team who love the ball, we do as well, but sometimes it is difficult.”

Jesus (with Phil Foden and Erling Haaland, circle) was signed from City in a £45million deal in 2022 to score goals – and he has done.

He spent most of his time defending against his former club but says he will do whatever is asked of him to help the team succeed.

He added: “The way I am, I try everything I can to help my team.

“It doesn’t matter where I play, I always try to do my best. And here, I did it.

“I was very deep. Normally I am not that deep, but I had to play as the winger, and I think I helped my team playing like this.

“But the most important thing, I think, is sometimes if you cannot win, you do not lose.”
