FERGUSON’S PUSHING FOR POSH GLORY

- BY DANIEL MARSH

DARREN FERGUSON is determined to savour the occasion this time around as Peterborough bid to emulate their 2014 triumph in the EFL Trophy a decade on.

Posh will lock horns with Wycombe in an all-League One affair at Wembley tomorrow.

Peterborough have history in the competition and Ferguson was in charge when they beat Chesterfield 3-1 at Wembley 10 years ago (above) – but he does not have fond memories of the match.

“We didn’t play well on the day. We won but they were the better team,” said Ferguson. “I can say that now because it was 10 years ago.

“This time I hope we can win again and also that maybe I can enjoy it a little bit more. But ultimately it’s not really about me – it’s about this young group of players going to Wembley and doing themselves justice.”

Now in his fourth spell with Peterborough, Ferguson has his sights set on the EFL Trophy and securing promotion.

But achieving such a feat would arguably surpass his four previous promotions with the club, given the youthful core of the team. The average age of the squad is the lowest in the whole of League One at 22.9.

Ferguson said: “It’s a very young squad. We know that the group has a lot of potential.

“At the minute, though, it’s only potential.

“Can you get a promotion with this group? Can you win a trophy with this group?

“That’s the be all and end all.”

Like Ferguson, Ephron Mason-Clark (below, left) will be treading familiar ground this weekend. With a seven-figure transfer to Coventry signed off in January, Mason-Clark’s time in a blue shirt is limited until the end of the season. Mason-Clark, 24, said: “Playing at Wembley was a dream growing up in the estates. Even travelling to Barnet everyday to training on the Jubilee Line, I’d see it every day. I used to think, ‘One day I’ll be able to play there’.

“Ending my time here with silverware would be the best outcome for me personally.”
