Sunak must end arms sales now

-

THERE can be no excuses for the assassination of seven World Central Kitchen workers by the Israeli war machine. Israel Defence Forces have killed almost 200 aid workers to date and it can be argued the reason for doing so is to generate starvation in Gaza, which, of course, is a war crime.

Now three former Supreme Court judges, among more than 600 lawyers, academics and retired senior judges, have warned that the UK government is breaking international law by continuing to arm Israel.

Once again, dishevelled Rishi Sunak is sitting on the fence, thus permitting more atrocities to occur.

Bill Cook, Teignmouth, Devon

When are the UK, America and the rest of the Western world going to do something about Israel? Another seven aid workers have been killed while driving a perfectly well marked vehicle.

The Israeli PM says: “This happens in war.” This is not a war, it is a systematic extermination of Palestinian people. They accepted Jewish people from Hitler’s Germany as it was historically their homeland.

What has happened since then is that the hard right wing Zionists have taken over the country, and for the last 30 years, they have been pushing Palestinians off their land.

The Israeli PM says he is going to eradicate Hamas. But what he is actually doing is encouraging recruitment for them. As two-thirds of those massacred are women

and children, how does he maintain it’s Hamas he is killing?

It’s time the West stopped supplying Israel with weapons. The situation at the moment is a disgrace to humanity.

Catherine McChleery, Coventry

Our government should immediately suspend arms sales to Israel. Why are Sunak and co so hesitant in doing so? Just like they were hesitant on calling for any sort of ceasefire.

What we have seen over the recent months is the mass slaughter of innocent people in Gaza, mostly women and children, by Israeli forces.

Enough is enough and the UK and US should suspend arm sales now.

Stephen Griffiths, Cardiff

The Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu has excused the murder by the IDF of seven people working for the food aid charity World Central Kitchen as a “tragic case of our forces unintentionally hitting innocent people in the Gaza Strip.”

The war has now resulted in 32,845 deaths to date. Ceasefire now. Sasha Simic, North London

After Easter prayers to stop Gaza killings, seven angels of mercy are killed by Israel’s military. This isn’t collateral damage or unintentional mistakes, it’s Israel’s murderous revenge and they now face global isolation. Arms shipments must stop.

Reg Barrett, Southminster, Essex

It’s appalling that the weapons that killed these aid workers could have been supplied by this country. In any case, Britain should stop all arms sales to Israel at once if only because these weapons are killing innocent Palestinians en masse. Tony Howard, Salford

I feel there is little sympathy for those who bypass safe countries to enter Britain illegally and then stay in hotels for months on end until their cases are heard.

There is concern, however, that using this issue to withdraw from the European Court of Human Rights treaty on a populist ticket could have long-term consequences and open the gate for weakening human rights protection over a number of other issues such as employment rights.

I hope this isn’t Mr Sunak’s grand plan.
