MUM STAB MURDER ‘CAUGHT ON CCTV’ National manhunt for suspect
THE killing of a young mum in front of her baby is believed to have been captured on CCTV.
Kulsuma Akter, 27, had her child in a pram when she was stabbed multiple times. She died later in hospital but her son was unharmed.
Police have launched a nationwide manhunt for suspect Habibur Masum, 25, who was known to the victim. He is believed to still be in the UK and people have been warned not to approach him.
Flowers have been left at the scene outside the Westgate International Food shop in Bradford, West Yorks. Detectives have taken CCTV footage from the shop, which is understood to show the moment Ms Akter was stabbed on Saturday afternoon.
A source at the shop said yesterday: “Our CCTV covers the inside of the store and a camera shows outside where the attack happened.”
He said a man was seen talking to the woman, and that the baby was six months old.
“Then he attacked the woman, there is screaming and he has killed her,” he added. “He has then run away and jumped over a fence and got away. There was no car.”
Masum is on bail for assaulting and threatening to kill Ms Akter, despite prosecutors objecting to his release, it was reported last night.
He pleaded not guilty to both offences at Manchester magistrates court on November 27 last year and was ordered not to contact her.
A shopkeeper has told how he desperately tried to save her. Geo Khan, 69, said he heard screams and ran outside. He said: “Blood was all over on the floor and there were stab wounds in her neck.”
Imran Khan, a tailor, also tried to help. He called emergency services and told his staff to bring cloth to help stem the blood flow.
He added: “I tried to find a pulse and I was covered in blood.
“It’s very sad. We don’t get this around here. It’s just horrible for the whole community.”
Police yesterday released an image of Masum boarding a bus in the city centre, minutes after the attack. He was last sighted getting off it in the Bradford Moor Park area, a couple of miles away.
He was living in Oldham, Gtr Manchester, but is believed to have links to Burnley, Lancs, and Chester, Cheshire. Police raided properties in the North West yesterday and 23-year-old man was arrested in Cheshire on suspicion of assisting an offender.
Masum is believed to be from Bangladesh and was in the UK on a student visa, and later a post-graduate visa after getting a degree. According to LinkedIn he studied a masters in marketing at the University of Bedfordshire.
Officers also had contact with Ms Akter, who was understood to have been staying in a woman’s refuge.
West Yorkshire’s Assistant Chief Constable Damien Miller said that the incident has “understandably caused a lot of shock and concern”.
