A bridge too far Wednesday

-

We’re bang in the middle of a cost-ofliving crisis with a crumbling health service, Trump champing at the bit, and a planet on the edge of a Third World War.

The daily news is so bleak, it makes Brexit, Liz Truss’s premiership and sometimes even EastEnders look upbeat.

So what feelgood film has Hollywood greenlit this week to help

us beat the doom and gloom? Bridget Jones 4. Hooray! Who better to brighten things up than the funny, boozy, hopeless romantic Bridget?

The everywoman with the witty quips, charming mishaps, big pants and a normal waistline? The one we love just the way she is? But there’s a catch. The next film is based on the last Helen Fielding novel, Mad About The Boy...

(SPOILER ALERT! If you haven’t heard the plot, or seen the headlines from the time, count yourself lucky and move straight to Thursday.)

For the rest of us, we do know what this means: Bridget and Mark Darcy’s Happy Ever After is going the way of One Day, Love Story and Bambi’s mum.

Which just about sums up the current world mood.

What next? Pretty Woman 2: Vivian dies from an undiagnosed

STD from her time on the streets? Four

Weddings and A Second Funeral: Andie McDowell slips and comes a cropper after another ill-advised smooch in the rain?

Or maybe Love Actually 2: Natalie’s back as the tea lady following the assassination of Hugh Grant’s PM on a foreign engagement?

To quote Orson Welles: “If you want a happy ending, that depends, of course, on where you stop your story.”

So, please Bridget, do us a public service: just remain a trilogy.
