Photo ID rules favour Tories

-

So this flawed system of requiring voters to show photo ID could end up with a load of Tory MPs keeping hold of their seats at the next general election.

Those in marginal seats like Suella Braverman, Priti Patel, Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss are the ones who would benefit from this absurd rule.

I find it absolutely galling that five million people could be turned away from voting simply because they don’t have photo ID. That is insane. What I do find surprising though is that it is more young people who aren’t aware of the need for photo ID.

However, the Tories have an agenda and I doubt they will change the rules while the current situation suits them better. Ronny Miller, Kimberley, Notts

■ The ID requirement will once again rule many out of voting. Well done to the Mirror for campaigning to get the message out there about the requirements for photo identification, but it seems the message still isn’t getting through.

We have had a growing problem for many years with low turnouts at the polls and any real change in government has to start with people actually getting out to vote. However, surely if the excuse is that they can’t be bothered or it’s too much trouble to remember to take your ID, then what can be easier than casting your vote by post?

Regarding your item which states that a poll has found that 16% of people don’t know they need to produce photo ID, I think this is absolutely outrageous and unacceptable.

This country is supposed to be a democratic one in which everyone over the age of 18 has a right to vote. If this practice is set to stay, far more should have been done to make people aware, such as a statement in large letters on voting cards reminding people of the fact.

As a result of this practice, many voters will miss out, which is what the Tories want. D Richens, South East London London

■ With the elections taking place on May 2, if people do not have valid photo ID they can obtain a Voter Authority Certificate from the Electoral Services Department of their local authority.

The deadline for applications for the May 2 election is April 24. They can also apply for a postal vote, the deadline for this being this Wednesday.

In both cases though, they will

have to be on the electoral roll by tomorrow, April 16.

■ Rishi Sunak knew what he was doing when he introduced photo ID for voting. Many people don’t even have a passport or driving licence and the only document a lot of older people have is a bus pass, so this would stop them from voting even though they have done so all their lives.

This new regulation is going to stop some people voting for Labour as many Tory voters are well off and more than likely have a passport. Decisive or dodgy? I know what I think.

■ So the Government says the need for photo ID to vote was brought in to counter fraud. So why have they not done more to publicise the need for photo ID? Alan Doyle, Rhyl

■ If you’re not sure about the new ID obstacles for casting your vote then simply apply for a postal vote by 5pm on Wednesday. You can do it online as long as you are on the electoral register. Michael Wild, Wakefield
