MORRIS TRIBUTE TO BOSS EDWARDS

- BY MIKE WALTERS

CARLTON MORRIS thanked West Ham fans for clapping doomed Luton off the pitch and admitted he was proud of the heartbroken Hatters.

The pre-season favourites for relegation need a final-day miracle with a 12-goal swing to pull off the Colditz, Alcatraz and Shawshank of great escapes.

But skipper Morris (top) won’t look back in anger after their getaway tunnel collapsed on the Queen Elizabeth II Olympic Park. And he gave manager Rob Edwards (circle) a glowing reference as the man to lead a renewed assault on the Championship.

He said: “I can’t speak highly enough of the gaffer - I don’t envy his job at all because of the hours he works and the diligence he puts in, but that’s why he has 25 to 30 lads who are right behind him pulling in the same direction.

“Last season we showed we had the unity and togetherness to get this far, and wherever we play next season we’ll be eager to show those qualities again.

“As a group, these are humble lads who care about the fans and the staff – that togetherness is what got us here.

“At times we’ve been in games and been done by a bit of quality late on, but in this division you get punished if you switch off for just a second.

“But we’ve learned a lot, we’ve grown as players and as people, and I walked off the pitch with nothing but pride.”
