The industrial size washing machine is on about five times a day and a spare bedroom has been converted into a laundry room where the ironing board is constantly up. One wall is devoted to storage and when clothes come out of the drier, they go into the family’s individual baskets.
Karen works two days a week and relies on a slow cooker for dinners of chicken curry or chicken pasta. And there’s always a pot of soup on the go.
She admits having so many children is expensive.
She said: “I must spend £250 a week on food and it’s £80 a week on lunch and train fares for the boys.
“It would be £200 just to go to the cinema with popcorn as a family – so we watch a movie at home.”
There’s a chart of chores for the boys and they help with the dishwasher and putting the rubbish out. By the third set, Karen felt more in control.
