Holt is eyeing up the Killie job

- ALAN MARSHALL

GARY HOLT admits he has approached Kilmarnock about the vacant manager’s job at Rugby Park.

The Killie legend – who won the Scottish Cup with the club in 1997 – was in the stands to watch his boyhood heroes beaten 2-1 by Aberdeen yesterday.

Holt revealed he is interested in taking over from Lee Clark and that his representative has made contact with the club about the vacancy.

Holt told Sky Sports: Interested, yes. Desperate for a job? Not at the moment but it’s something I have spoken about with my family and my agent.

“I’ve got to think about where I want to go and what I want to do. I am interested but I leave it to my agent.

“He’s made contact with them through whatever channels it has to be. I’ll leave it in his hands. I’ve not heard anything back.”

But ex-Killie midfielder Holt faces competition from interim boss Lee McCulloch, who has been widely tipped for the job.

Meanwhile, Celtic hero Alan Thompson has been appointed as ex-Rugby Park gaffer Clark’s No.2 at Bury.

The 43-year-old – who won nine major trophies at Parkhead – was a coach under Neil Lennon at Celtic until he was surprisingly axed in 2012 after concerns about his lifestyle.

Now Thompson will reunite with Clark for the first time since working together at Birmingham in 2014 and Blackpool two years ago.

Clark said: “Alan’s joined as my assistant. He is a man of great experience as a player and No.2. He has great knowledge of the game.”

Clark got off to a winning start at Bury as he guided the Shakers to a 2-1 win at Gary Caldwell’s Chesterfield in his first game in charge.
