and we’ve had to accept the quality of what’s on offer, which hasn’t always been to the standards we’d prefer.
“We have watched the quality and sales of these important gum lines decrease dramatically due to poor quality and inconsistent supply.
“I wanted to turn the clock back and make jelly babies and wine gums that produced a soft chew, but with a taste explosion.
“We’re using an old fashioned recipe and we’re keeping it a closely guarded secret, but I’m happy to reveal one or two details of the mix.
“We use only quality ingredients and flavours , including gelatine for a firm, chewy texture. It is expensive so other manufacturers have replaced it with cheaper starches. There are five flavours – lemon, lime, strawberry, orange and blackcurrant.
“We considered calling the sweets Scottish weans instead of jelly babies, but didn’t know how that would play throughout our UK customer base.”
Golden Casket also produce the Buchanan’s range of confectionery, as well as Gibbs boilers, Hawick balls and Millions.
But Crawford says they will only produce gums, babies and gems for their brand.
Sales and marketing director Sandra Fisher added: “It won’t be too long before they’re challenging the chocolate caramels, peppermint creams and fudge for top spot.”
