Ian: Jambos were right to confront me

- GAVIN BERRY

IAN CATHRO has no issue with the furious fans who launched an angry tirade as he left Easter Road and admits he expects to face it again.

The Hearts boss was confronted by enraged

punters after seeing their side’s limp display which saw them crash out the Scottish Cup in a 3-1 loss at Hibs.

Video footage emerged on social media of one raging female fan having a go at Cathro, who was flanked by security, and he admitted others were involved.

But Cathro is happy to cop flak from the Hearts faithful because it shows how much they care and underlines the size of the club he has joined for his first managerial role.

Now the 30-year-old wants to see his players repay the fans when they travel to Firhill today to take on Partick Thistle looking to end a threegame winless run.

Asked about the incident in midweek, Cathro said: “There were a couple of people and they were upset and angry. There was no problem with what was said.

“It didn’t shock me, I expected more of them. I wouldn’t have had a problem with that. I know how much football means to people.

“Was it a conversation? A little bit. But there was no problem. This is a real football club and people care and games mean something. That is our life.

“It would be worse if fans didn’t care – it just can’t be that way because we wouldn’t be able to achieve the things we want to achieve. It has to matter to people and it has to be real.

“I’m good with it. People were hurt because of what happened and they should be. I need to deal with it.”

St Mirren gaffer Jack Ross recently said he’d be happy to speak to fans at any time for discussions after jumping into the crowd at full-time following a defeat.

But Cathro said: “My door isn’t always open – I don’t think there are that many biscuits in the tin.”
