You sing the melody and I’ll do the barking vocals

MEET Jake, a dog who likes to unwind after a hard day’s work with a tuneful howl at pub karaoke.

The four-year-old terrier spends his days chasing seagulls away at his master Carl Nielsen’s side at Arbroath harbour.

He loves nothing more than a trip to the pub for a singalong after clocking off for the day.

After a few slurps of Guinness, he often has a natter with his canine friends, also regulars at the dog-friendly Stag’s Head, near his home in Carnoustie, Angus.

Manageress Jackie Liddell said: “Jake and Carl come in most evenings after they have finished their shift at the harbour. As soon as his life jacket is off, he is up for fun.

“We have live music in the pub at the weekends and he sings along with the bands.

“He loves it when we have karaoke and takes his turn at the mike. I think he just likes to be the centre of attention.”

Jake’s favourite song is not Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol or even George Thorogood’s Bad to the Bone, preferring a hearty version of The Beach Boys’ 60s classic Sloop John B.

The border and Irish terrier cross earns his relaxation time by noising up gulls as harbour assistant Carl, 39, works.

He said: “Jake is with me constantly. While he’s the family pet, he knows when his life jacket goes on he is at his work.

“He chases away the seagulls which can be quite aggressive. He is relentless and doesn’t show any fear and some of these birds are as big as him.

“He also chases rats from the stacked lobster creels.”

Jake is a favourite with kids who visit the harbour and he has his own Facebook page.

Carl said: “He’s the most photographed dog in Arbroath. All the children want a selfie with him.”
