Bookie apology after punters get charged double

William Hill blame online error on banks

A BOOKMAKERS have apologised after customers were stripped of cash due to an online banking error.

One punter who received an apology from William Hill said he believed millions of rogue payments were taken from customers worldwide.

Last night, the bookies confirmed they’d accidentally processed payments twice but refused to say how much money was involved.

They blamed the issue on banks who, they said, uploaded “duplicate” payment files which triggered the second payments.

Punter Garry Hutson, who placed an accumulator bet on matches involving Hibs, Benfica, Paris St Germain and PSV Eindhoven, was stung for £200 by the online glitch.

His initial stake was withdrawn from his account on Monday but another sum was taken 24 hours later.

When the 54-year-old, from Edinburgh, called William Hill to complain, he claimed an adviser told him that “every one” of their customers had been affected.

He added: “They said the problem was with my bank but, when I called the bank, they directed me to William Hill.

“I wasn’t affected too badly but what if the extra payment took someone else over their overdraft limit?”

When William Hill spotted the error, they alerted customers by email.

A spokesman said: “We expect all customers to have been refunded by today. We have already apologised to our customers and will look at any cases of hardship sympathetically.”
