WASTE OFTIME AND MONEY

- GAVIN BERRY

ALLY McCOIST insists Rangers’ pursuit of a director of football is a waste of time and money that won’t solve their problems.

The Ibrox club have been snubbed by No.1 target Ross Wilson for the

upstairs role the board see as being crucial to take Gers forward.

Rangers remain in the market to fill the position with former Spurs man Paul Mitchell another being considered by the Light Blues.

But ex-boss and strike legend McCoist reckons it’s not what his old club need as they await the arrival of manager-in-waiting Pedro Caixinha.

McCoist – who admitted he knows nothing of the Portuguese set to succeed Mark Warburton – said: “A lot of people talk about directors of football and all that but I just think that’s absolute nonsense.

“I’m not blowing the concept completely out of the water but it’s absolute garbage for people to think a director of football is going to solve the club’s problems.

“Wilson might be the best director of football on the planet but what’s his budget at Southampton? He might come up to Rangers and not have a budget. Work that one out.

“The role works for some clubs but my point is it won’t help Rangers right now, no matter who they bring in. It will just be another wage.

“Jock Stein, Walter Smith and Alex Ferguson didn’t need a director of football. I’m not saying it’s a bad idea but it won’t solve the problem.

“It has nothing to do with directors of football. It’s about players on the park and the club needs investment to get that. I don’t think it’s rocket science, I really don’t.”

Caixinha’s most recent spell in management was for Al-Gharafa in Qatar. He also worked in Mexico and had other spells in Europe as a No.2.

McCoist said: “I only know what I have read and seen on the internet. I’m probably in the same boat as 95 per cent of Rangers supporters, indeed the Scottish public, in that I don’t know an awful lot about him.

“Anyone is a risk at the moment but obviously if he gets it you wish him all the best. I actually don’t think the manager is the biggest thing needing sorted out. It goes a lot deeper than that.”
