Lib Dem insults show some cheek

-

THE Lib Dems have some cheek accusing any party of being “political cousins” with right-wingers.

This, after all, is the same party who spent five years slashing welfare and cosying up to the Tories in a UK coalition government.

Yet their sole remaining Scottish MP Alistair Carmichael yesterday compared Alex Salmond to Donald Trump and Nigel Farage. And former deputy prime minister Nick Clegg claimed there is an “umbilical link” between the SNP and UKIP.

The pair’s comments came after London mayor Sadiq Khan made similarly ill-judged remarks earlier this month.

There’s plenty to criticise the SNP for– and the Daily Record will not fail to do so when they deserve it.

The party’s record on a range of devolved services is patchy and after 10 years in government it feels like they’ve run out of steam. But the idea they share political DNA with UKIP or Trump is a nonsense.

It’s also an insult to the decent Scots up and down the country who vote SNP and want to see Scotland independent one day.

Do Clegg and Carmichael really think the 1.6million people who voted Yes in 2014 are all “divisive”? That’s clearly not the case and it’s offensive to suggest that it is.

The SNP position themselves as a left of centre party who are pro-immigration and pro-Europe.

It may be comforting for the Lib Dems to demonise their opponents in this way. But it’s not going to help them recover from the electoral meltdown they’ve suffered since 2010.
