NEWSREADER Dermot Murnaghan yesterday revealed he had been the victim of a hit and run accident.

The Sky News broadcaster – who has been off air for two days – shared a picture of his bruised and swollen face on Twitter.

The 59-year-old, who presents the Sky News Tonight With Dermot Murnaghan programme, wrote alongside it: “This is why I haven’t been on the air for 2 days.”

Dermot added that he was knocked down in a “hit and run” on Thursday in Kentish Town, north London.

And he showed his sense of humour had not been knocked out of him by the painful accident.

One Twitter joker reposted the picture of the presenter’s face, saying: “Perhaps someone doesn’t like his show.”

Dermot, who has previously worked for the BBC and ITV in a career of more than two decades and hosted quiz shows Eggheads and Treasure Hunt, replied there were “plenty of suspects.”

Fans and pals rallied around the popular journalist to offer their support in response to his post.

Simon Withington responded: “When the news man becomes the news. Poor you.”

Tom Boadle, a colleague and political editor at Sky, said: “Good gritty look that. Hope it heals nice and quick.”

Broadcaster Caroline Feraday posted: “Sorry to hear this Dermot, hope you heal up easy and they catch them.”

Fellow Sky News host Jayne Secker said: “Flipping heck Dermot. Take care of yourself.”

The details of the incident were not clear last night but Dermot is a keen cyclist and has been hurt while pedalling before.

He once broke four ribs after being knocked off his bicycle by a pitbull terrier and he regularly gets around London on hire bikes.

Dermot, who has his own cycling blog, faced criticism in October when he was pictured riding through a red light in Sloane Square, central London.
