Monster success for Lewis

TEENAGE Scots actor Lewis MacDougall was celebratin­g last night after the film he starred in landed a major award.

A Monster Calls was named best sci-fi film at the Empire awards in London.

The movie stars Lewis, 14, of Edinburgh, as troubled schoolboy Conor.

He has spoken previously of how the tragic death in 2013 of his mum, Fiona, who had multiple sclerosis, helped him relate to the role.

The awards at London’s Roundhouse recognised global talent in film and TV.

JK Rowling’s Harry Potter spin-off Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them was a big winner, taking home four awards.

Eddie Redmayne was best actor and it picked up gongs for production design, costume and make-up.

The hero award went to Tom Hiddleston, the inspiratio­n award to Luc Besson and the legend award to Sir Patrick Stewart.

I, Daniel Blake won the award for best British film.

Felicity Jones was named best actress for her role in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which was best film.

BBC’s The Night Manager won best TV series.

Speaking ahead of the ceremony, Game of Thrones star Daniel Portman backed Scotland to go it alone.

The Glaswegian, 25, who plays Podrick Payne, said: “If I could run the British empire for a day I would give Scotland its independen­ce.

“I am absolutely for it with the kind of mess we are in now. I am very vocal but everybody is entitled to their own opinion.”
