A MAN suspected of killing a toddler in a hammer attack was held by police last night.

One-year-old Gabriel was pronounced dead in hospital and twin sister Maria was critically injured.

Bidhya Sagar Das, 33, who is thought to be the children’s father, was being grilled in connection with the incident.

Neighbours told how their mother Cristinela Das ran into the street screaming.

A woman, who gave her name as Gui Gui, said: “She shouted, ‘My kids, my kids’. I saw the ambulance come for the babies.

“One was moving, the other was being held close. I couldn’t see it moving.”

Speaking about Das, she added: “Sometimes he would say, ‘Maybe they are not my children’.”

A 28-year-old woman who said she was Cristinela’s best friend, said: “We spoke last night.

“She was saying she was fine. Because we are best friends I know she was not.”

Referring to Mr Das, she added: “I think he had mental problems.”

The suspect had fled when police arrived at the house in Hackney, London, on Saturday night.

DCI Dave Whellams said: “The incident is believed to be domestic.” Forensic officers were yesterday seen collecting a hammer from the back of the three-storey property.

The building is thought to be owned by the nearby Pembury Hotel and split into apartments for staff.

One worker said Mr Das had been a receptionist for seven years but had left his job days earlier.

Mihai Menea, 29, who lives in the building, said: “The neighbour underneath heard screaming. When he went into the room the boy was already dying.

“The lady came down screaming. The boy died in his arms. He was in shock.”
