A PENSIONER died after being swept away by a fast-flowing burn as he walked back from a night out.

The 66-year-old man was on his way to a friend’s house after a charity event on Saturday night and is thought to have fallen into the water.

His body was found in Kilchrenan burn, south of Oban in Argyll, after a search by police and fire crews.

A police spokesman confirmed: “About 5.25am on Sunday, the body of a 66-year-old man was discovered in a burn in the Kilchrenan area.

“Inquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding his death which police are not treating as suspicious at this time.”

It’s thought the man and his wife had been at a cheese and wine fundraiser in the local village hall before setting off to walk to their friend’s house.

Marilyn Henderson, an elder at Kilchrenan Parish Church, said: “The whole community is shocked by this tragedy and our thoughts are with the man’s family at this sad time.

“I was at church and we were praying for his wife.

“I understand that they were walking to the house when the man fell in. The burn is in full spate.”

A road in the village was closed for several hours yesterday while emergency crews were searching.

A resident said: “There were police there and the fire brigade were searching the verges with torches.

“They found the person quite quickly.” IT LOOKS a little loco as a train emerges from a block of flats but this city’s planners are chuffed.

Chongqing in south-east China is known as Mountain City for its densely packed skyscrapers – and fitting in a light railway system was causing a real headache. So their solution was to build through the 19-storey tower rather than go around it or demolish it.

Residents there can hop on at Liziba station, which was built on the sixth to eighth floors, and rail bosses added sound reduction gear that makes the trains about as noisy as a dishwasher.

A transport spokesman for Chongqing said: “Our city is very heavily built upon and that can make finding room for roads and railway lines a real challenge.”
