REFUGEE AID DESTROYED BY MORONS
Vandals target charity collections
MINDLESS vandals have ransacked a centre filled with aid donated for refugee families.
The morons’ wrecking spree has left supporters who organise collections for Shetland Solidarity with Refugees “disappointed and utterly sickened”.
Volunteer Rita Smith discovered the break-in at Lerwick’s Brevik House on Tuesday.
Lights were smashed, glass scattered into boxes and many of the donated items were destroyed.
Police yesterday said they were investigating “malicious damage”.
A police spokesman said: “This is a particularly despicable crime as many of the items had been donated by the local community for the Shetland Solidarity with Refugees group.”
Volunteers had been collecting winter clothes for families stranded in refugee camps.
Local people condemned the attack on social media.
Lesley Moar said: “I just cannot believe this is happening in Shetland.”
Sharon Jack added: “What an insult to the hard work people have done and to the people who donated. Absolutely appalling.”
A JustGiving page has been launched to help the group bounce back.
And generous supporters have already donated more than £600.
Rita said Brevik House would no longer be used for donations. But she added: “This won’t stop us or put us off. We’ll be back.”
