I’M PROUD TO ROAR FOR LIONS

-

SIR ALEX FERGUSON has revealed he’s honoured to be joining the party when Celtic celebrate the 50th anniversary of their European Cup triumph.

Rod Stewart will headline a star-studded event at Glasgow’s Hydro on Thursday, May 25 – 50 years to the day when the Lisbon Lions ensured Celtic became the first British team to lift the famous trophy.

Ferguson scored twice for Dunfermline in a 3-2 defeat against the Hoops as Jock Stein’s side went on to win the Scottish First Division title in a domestic clean sweep that same 1966-67 season.

At The Hydro Fergie will share his memories of that time – and of the players and manager who achieved Celtic’s great success.

Fergie said: “It’s an honour to have been invited to join the celebration of one of the greatest victories in the history of Scottish football.

“On the night of the game I was touring with the Scotland team and we were all sitting by the radio in Hong Kong, waiting for the hourly updates.

“When the final score came in everyone celebrated the result. It should be a great event and I am really looking forward to catching up with some genuine legends of the game.”

The former Manchester United boss worked with Stein as Scotland assistant in the 1980s and has described him as a mentor in his own managerial career.

When Ferguson took Aberdeen to European CupWinners’ Cup glory in 1983, where they beat Real Madrid in Gothenburg, he invited Stein to travel with the Dons party as his guest.

● Tickets for The Hydro event go on sale from 10am today (£25-£70) with net proceeds from the celebration evening going to the charity, Celtic FC Foundation.
