A DRINKER who died in a pub toilets was missed as staff left after closing time.

The body of the 53-year-old man was found in a cubicle by a shocked cleaner the next morning.

The grim discovery was made on Sunday morning at the West Kirk pub in Ayr’s Sandgate.

The man had been drinking in the pub, owned by the Wetherspoons chain, on Saturday night.

Sources say he had vodka with him in the cubicle where he was found.

Bosses at the West Kirk – a former church – refused to speak about the incident in detail yesterday.

The duty manager declined to speculate about how the man could have been left while staff put the lights out and went home.

Sources say workers allegedly checked the toilet, but the cubicle in which he was found was said to be “out of order.”

The dead man has not been named.

Inspector Jim Hendrie, of Ayr Police, said: “The next day the chap was found.

“There was nothing suspicious about the death. It was just unfortunate circumstances.”

Pub spokesman Eddie Gherson said: “We can confirm that a man’s body was found in the toilet at the West Kirk pub in Ayr.

“We pass on our sympathy to the family and friends of the man.

“This was also a shock to all of the staff at the pub.

“We will assist the police in any way we can.”

The pub was given a “gold standard” for its toilets less than two years ago in the ‘Loo of the Year Awards’.

The then manager Terri Hollywood said: “Staff at the pub ensure the toilets are in first-class condition at all times and it is great that this has been recognised by the inspectors.”
