CARS TORCHED AS GANG WAR HOTS UP

Arsonist hunt after three vehicles are set alight in early hours

THREE cars have been torched in the latest instalment of the gangland war between the Lyons and Daniel crime clans.

The vehicles were targeted in two streets less than a mile apart. Detectives believe the arsonist may have travelled between the locations in a grey car.

The attacks in the early hours of Wednesday came less than a fortnight after drug dealer Robert Daniel, 42, was shot outside his home in a failed assassination attempt.

Police said a grey Nissan Juke and a black VW Passat were set alight in Polnoon Avenue in Knightswood, Glasgow, and a silver Dodge Caliber was targeted outside a property on Anniesland Road.

No one was injured in either of the incidents.

Officers yesterday declined to comment on any links to the ongoing feud.

But underworld sources told the Record the attacks were related to the gangs’ tit-for-tat turf war. Detective Inspector Mark McLennan said the cars were torched at about 5.20am. He added: “Despite the early hour of these incidents, there may have been people heading to work or coming home from work.

“Anniesland Road is a busy thoroughfare and someone may have noticed something which could assist our inquiries.

“I am appealing to people who were in the areas to contact us with any information they may have.”

Initial inquiries have revealed that a man was seen getting out of a small grey car in Polnoon Avenue around the time of the incidents.

Detectives are trawling CCTV footage in a bid to map the arsonist’s movements.

Yesterday, we reported how Scotland’s top police officer has pledged to throw everything at the crime clans in a bid to stop the violence.

Chief Constable Phil Gormley vowed the investigations into the assassination of gangland figure Euan Johnston, 26, in November and the failed hit on Daniel will have access to every specialist resource at his disposal.

His comments came hours after Johnston’s funeral. ● Anyone with information about the arson attacks is asked to contact CID officers at Drumchapel police station on 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
