Eve gets Swede success
EVE MUIRHEAD’S Scotland team notched bronze in China with a 6-4 victory over Sweden in the play-off at the World Women’s Curling Championship.
The Swedes took the early advantage with a 3-1 half-time lead in Beijing.
But the Scots hit back in style with Muirhead leading the way.
She said: “That was a strong team performance. We really wanted that medal.” TENNIS: Johanna Konta produced a much-improved performance to ease past Pauline Parmentier and book her place in the fourth round of the Miami Open.
After struggling to see off qualifier Aliaksandra Sasnovich in a three-set marathon on Saturday the British No.1 was given an easier time as she beat her French opponent 6-4 6-0. SNOOKER: Scottish star John Higgins wants to right some wrongs at the China Open.
Wishaw’s four-time world champion has lost in two previous China finals, in 2006 and 2009, and last year he reached the semis.
Higgins, who opens against Ian Burns tomorrow, said: “I’ve lost in a couple of finals so I’d love to get that one on the mantelpiece.” BASKETBALL: Glasgow Rocks dropped out of the BBL’s top three for the first time since November after losing 93-84 at leaders Leicester Riders last night.
Kieron Achara had 21 points and 12 rebounds but a late rally from the Scots fell short as they suffered a fifth straight loss. ATHLETICS: Gillian Black claimed she had nothing left to give after coming 46th at the World Cross-Country Championships in Uganda.
The Glasgow teen was second Brit home in the junior women’s race two places ahead of Forres prospect Anna MacFadyen.
Scottish champ Black said: “I gave it everything I had. There are definite lessons I’ll be able to take from this.” AUTO: Scot John McPhee got his bid to win the Moto3 Grand Prix World Championship off to a promising start when he finished second in the season-opening race in Qatar. The 23-year-old from Oban was just 0.135 seconds behind Spaniard Joan Mir.
