Man by Man

SCOTLAND Craig Gordon

Stayed big to make a vital block at his front post but this was a quiet night for the keeper thanks to the efficiency of his back four.

Kieran Tierney

Big call to slot left-footed Celtic star into makeshift right-back role and passed test with flying colours. Barely gave Bezjak a sniff. Forced himself forward as confidence grew.

Russell Martin

Denied by a great save inside two minutes and thwarted by referee’s whistle on seven. Performed equally with distinction at his own end to stifle the Slovenian attack.

Charlie Mulgrew

Calm, composed head at heart of defence. Tag-teamed Martin efficiently to limit targetman Ilicic.

Andy Robertson

Energetic shift from left-back bursting forward on the overlap without neglecting his defensive duties. Perfectly weighted ball to set wheels in motion for best chance.

James Forrest

Looked dangerous in the first half with regular forays down the right flank, laying on a decent chance for Griffiths. But his influence waned.

Scott Brown

Commanding performance in heart of midfield. Tenacious in breaking up Slovenian moves and creative.

Stuart Armstrong

Thrived on debut night. Positive driving forward in the advanced midfield role, teed up Griffiths to hit post and then his touch of class at the death created the winner.

James Morrison

Agonisingly close with a rasping long-range drive into the sidenetting and brought composure to hectic midfield scrap. Classy show.

Robert Snodgrass

Quality deliveries caused problems for Slovenians. Lovely dink to Griffiths in front of goal should have been rewarded with the opener. Drifted out the game in second half and replaced.

Leigh Griffiths

Knee in the back forced striker off early but kick in teeth from Lady Luck hurt most. Must still wonder how his volley from inside six yards hit the bar. Clattered post with another terrific effort.
